More than 600,000 students entered the competition and 3,000 were chosen for the national competition.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Gabrielle Hines and Jennifer Gilby, rising juniors at Palm Harbor University High, won first place in the senior exhibit category at the 42nd annual National History Day competition which was held at the University of Maryland earlier this month.

Their exhibit on neonatal pioneer Dr. Martin A. Couney , titled Fifteen Cents to See the Infants on Display,  amazed historians. Couney tried to educate the public about babies born prematurely by creating boardwalk sideshows.

This year, more than 600,000 students entered the History Day contest with 3,000 making it to the national competition. The first, second and third place winners were awarded prizes and scholarships.
