A nationally acclaimed program comes to Largo.

LARGO – Six recent Tampa Bay area military veterans and one military spouse will tell their personal stories of service 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 1) at the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive. The show is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The powerful program is called Telling: Tampa Bay. It is part of the Telling Project, a nationally acclaimed initiative that seeks to bridge the gap between today’s veterans and their communities. Today, less than 1 percent of the population has served in the military since 9/11. As a result, many members of the public are out of touch with service men and women and don’t understand their experiences. The project was founded by Jonathan Wei in 2008. Regional performances have been conducted in 17 cities in 12 states.

Telling: Tampa Bay’s format is a scripted stage performance under the direction of widely known Gulfport dramatist Lisa Powers. The veterans will tell how service affected their lives and attitudes.  They will talk about how and why they served, the injuries and challenges they’ve had to overcome and how they are transitioning back into civilian life. A question-and-answer session follows.

The seven veterans who appear on stage were chosen after interviews of numerous applicants. The interviews also provided the basis for the script. Telling: Tampa Bay played before packed houses in St. Petersburg and Sarasota, and drew large crowds for two Tampa performances. The program is sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council in partnership with the Telling Project and with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Bob Woodruff Foundation and the Saunders Foundation.
