Largo Police Accuse St. Petersburg Man of Dog Theft
Police say the man traded the Yorkshire terrier for crack cocaine and cash. The dog is still missing.
LARGO – Police here have arrested a man they say stole a Yorkshire terrier from a pet store.
Wayne Junior Barfield, 38, was arrested Friday (Jan. 15) and charged with retail theft, having no drivers license and resisting an officer without violence, according to Largo police and Pinellas County jail records.
Largo police say Barfield stole a $1,600 Yorkshire terrier from All About Puppies at 7190 Ulmerton Road on Jan. 12. They say Barfield was captured on video placing the dog down his shirt and leaving the store. Detectives said that, about 3 p.m. Jan. 12, Barfield was driven to the area of Winn Dixie and Dunkin Donuts at 4th Street and 75th Avenue N in St. Petersburg, where he allegedly traded/sold the dog in exchange for crack cocaine and cash. Barfield, currently incarcerated at the Pinellas County Jail, acknowledged he disposed of the dog, but would not disclose to whom.
The Yorkie is microchipped and the chip information is entered as stolen in state and national computer databases. Any veterinarian checking the microchip will be alerted to the fact that the dog was stolen.
Anyone with information should call Largo police Detective Lance Moore at (727) 586-7478. All About Puppies is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the return of the Yorkie.
