SAND KEY – Two teenagers from North Carolina were injured Tuesday (July 19) after a lightning strike on Sand Key, according to Clearwater public safety officials.

Cameron Poimboeuf, 15, of Charlotte, NC, first was taken to Largo Medical Center before being transferred to Tampa General Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Jansen M. Tabor, 18, of Matthews, N.C., was listed in good condition at Tampa General Hospital. Cameron was visiting the area with his girlfriend’s family. Tabor is a member of the girlfriend’s family.

Tabor told officials that the two were walking on Sand Key in front of the Lighthouse Towers shortly before 4:30 p.m. when the storm came in. The two ran for shelter from the rain. Tabor said the next thing he knew, he woke up on the sand. Officials say lightning either struck them or struck nearby the two.
