As part of the re-accreditation process, examiners want to hear from the public on the Gulfport Police Department’s ability to comply with standards.

GULFPORT – Police Chief Robert Vincent announced Friday (March 20) that assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive April 21 to assess the Gulfport Police Department’s compliance with peer reviewed standards.

The agency’s initial accreditation was in 2000 and they have successfully earned re-accreditation every three years since then. Assessors will examine all aspects of the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services. The department has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to maintain its accredited status. As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team.

The accreditation manager for the Gulfport department is Lt. Joshua Stone. The assessment team is comprised of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies: Master Officer Tammy Farnham from the Stuart Police Department, Capt. Vic Neal from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation – Division of Alcohol Beverage and Tobacco, and Ms. Brenda Medel from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The assessors will review written materials; interview individuals; and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed. Once the commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to receive re-accredited status.

Comments from the public must be in writing and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CFA standards. A copy of the standards is available through the police department’s Professional Standards Section at (727) 893-1111 or (727) 893-1123. For information regarding CFA or for persons wishing to offer written comments about the Gulfport Police Department’s ability to meet accreditation standards, contact the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) at P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, FL, 32302, or email to info@flaccreditation.org. For information, see gulfportpolice.com.
