Florida Highway Patrol | Fatal Crash | Traffic Accident

The five-vehicle crash happened late Friday (May 1) afternoon near Palm Harbor, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A 25-year-old Georgia woman died Friday (May 1) as the result of injuries she sustained in a five-car crash near Palm Harbor.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators say it happened this way:

A 2009 Chevrolet driven by Krystal D. Weatherhead of Ellijay, GA, was traveling southbound in the inside lane of U.S. 19 south of Colonial Boulevard and north of Alderman Road near Palm Harbor. A 2002 Dodge pickup driven by Victor Manuel Cervera, 38,  of New Port Richey was traveling southbound in the inside middle lane.

A 2005 International semi tractor-trailer driven by Jose J. Negron, 38, of Wesley Chapel was traveling northbound in the inside lane of U.S. 19. A 2012 Toyota, driven by Thomas Roland Privey, 54, of Spring Hill was traveling northbound in the inside middle lane. A 2008 Hyundai, driven by Donna Jean Bailey, 60, of Clearwater was traveling northbound in the inside middle lane.

For unknown reasons, the right side of the Chevrolet collided with the left side of the Dodge pickup. As a result of this impact, the Chevrolet rotated counter-clockwise, traveled east across the median into oncoming traffic, entered the inside lane and collided with the tandem axle of the trailer being towed by the tractor-trailer. The force of this impact caused the tandem axle to dislodge from the trailer. The trailer became airborne and sailed over the Toyota. The axle continued north and came to final rest in the inside middle lane of U.S. 19. The trailer landed on top of the Hyundai and crushed the rear of the vehicle.

The tractor-trailer and its trailer, with the Hyundai wedged underneath it, continued north before coming to final rest north of Colonial Boulevard.

Weatherhead was taken by Bayflight to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she later died from injuries sustained in the crash. Bailey was taken to Bayonet Point with serious injuries. Cervera, Negron and Privey had no injuries.

The FHP says no charges have been filed.
