Fiery Skyway Crash Caused by Faulty Tire, FHP Says

A car burst into flames on the Sunshine Skyway after it hit the outer wall, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PINELLAS COUNTY – No one was injured after a car burst into flames on the Sunshine Skyway on Thursday (July 28) afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. when James Preston, 59, of Palmetto, was driving a 2010 Chrysler Pacifica north on the Sunshine Skyway. Troopers said his right rear tire malfunctioned, causing him to lose control of his car. The car hit the outside barrier wall and burst into flames. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue put out the flames.
