The Pinellas County Sheriff has partnered with the Springtime Club of Clearwater to try solving a cold case from 2001.

CLEARWATER -Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and members of the Springtime Club of Clearwater announced a collaboration Friday (June 19) to try solving the murder of Marco Waters.

They were joined by members of Mr. Waters’ family at a press conference at Sheriff’s headquarters in Largo to bring renewed attention to the 14-year-old unsolved homicide and to generate information that would help solve the case.

“We are confident that someone out there has information that would help solve this crime,” Gualtieri said. “We are hopeful that this campaign conducted in partnership with the Springtime Club, will prompt the community to begin a dialogue and to come forward with any  information they may have, no matter how insignificant it may seem, and help us bring closure to the Waters’ children and other family members.”

Deputies described what happened around 9:55 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2001:

Mr. Waters, who was 23, was sitting with his girlfriend in front of his sister’s apartment, 5401 Colfax St., Apt. 2, in Clearwater when two black men walked back and forth in front of the residence several times and then approached.

Mr. Waters’ girlfriend ran inside while the two men robbed Mr. Waters at gunpoint. Mr. Waters became engaged in a struggle with the two suspects. The suspects took Mr. Waters’ wallet containing a large sum of money. As the suspects fled, Mr. Waters yelled out to them and one of the suspects turned around and shot him.

Mr. Waters was taken to Largo Medical Center where he died a short time later. Detectives say Mr. Waters’ sister and girlfriend described the suspects as black men in their early twenties. The two had their faces covered.

The Springtime Club is organized for charitable, civic, and educational proposes to improve the environment in its neighborhood and surrounding communities. Members serve as community advocates for victim survivors and promote cultural activities and educational programs that provide access to opportunities that enhance the community. One of the group’s projects is a “cold case initiative” in which members develop activities and create events that memorialize the “familiar faces of the community’s cold cases” and honor the families who are survivors of unsolved murders.
