Clearwater Police Will Trade Guns for Gift Cards

A similar gun buyback in 2011 netted almost 200 guns.

CLEARWATER – This city’s police department is offering residents a chance to trade unwanted guns for gift cards on Saturday (Dec. 12).

The gun buyback program is designed to allow gun owners who no longer want their weapons to properly dispose of them – and to get a gift card as well.

“This is a safe and controlled way for people to dispose of a gun they no longer want or need around the house,” police Chief Dan Slaughter said. “Too many times we have weapons that are stolen during residential burglaries. This way, those unwanted guns won’t end up in the wrong hands.”

A similar event in 2011 collected nearly 200 guns

Handguns can be exchanged for a $50 Walmart gift card, while long guns will earn a $100 Walmart gift card. Those gift cards may come in especially handy during the holiday shopping season, police said.

No questions will be asked at the exchange. The serial numbers of guns will be checked to make sure they are not stolen; if they are stolen, an attempt will be made to contact the owner. The guns will then be destroyed.

BB guns and pellet guns will be accepted, but will not be eligible for a gift card.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, located at the corner of Drew Street and Old Coachman Road.
