Clearwater to Discuss Plans for Island Estates Bridges

Bridge | Roads | Traffic | Transportation

Clearwater officials plan to unveil plans Monday (March 9) for replacing four bridges on Island Estates.

CLEARWATER – Four bridges on Island Estates have experienced significant deterioration and have been scheduled for replacement. Two bridges are located on Island Way (between Skiff Point and Palm Island SE), and two are on Harbor Passage (from Island Way to Snug Island and also Harbor Island). The project currently is in the design phase, and construction is expected to begin later this year. City engineering officials will share information about project plans at the Island Estates Civic Association Meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Conference Room, 249 Windward Passage.

Until construction begins, certain portions of the bridges are restricted. Safety zones are marked with road striping in order to maintain safe means of access until the bridges are replaced.

Minor repairs were made to five additional bridges. All nine bridges were constructed in 1965 and were made of reinforced concrete. Four of the nine bridges have aged much faster than the others. The life expectancy of such structures is estimated to be 40 to 60 years.

After construction begins, Island Way residents can expect traffic to be maintained during phased construction. For information, call the Engineering Department at (727) 562-4749 or go to clearwater-fl.com.
