Pinellas sheriff’s deputies charged the man with resisting arrest and possession of crack cocaine, among other charges.

CLEARWATER — Pinellas deputies arrested a man who, they say, crashed into a mailbox and two other vehicles causing bodily injury in Clearwater on Saturday (Aug. 22).  The suspect fled the scene on foot before being caught by deputies.

According to deputies, a black 2006 Toyota Avalon was observed driving erratically near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Woodlawn Street in Clearwater about 2:55 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 22). Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle; however, the driver refused to stop and fled from deputies. Deputies did not pursue the vehicle.

Shortly afterward, deputies in the area were flagged down by a resident at 632 Woodlawn St. who reported that a vehicle matching the description of the Toyota Avalon had struck his mailbox and fled the scene. While speaking with the citizen, deputies observed the same vehicle driving near the residence. Deputies initiated a traffic stop. The driver, 27 year-old Ricky Renard Fergerson, initially complied. As deputies approached the vehicle, Fergerson sped off south on Scranton Avenue.

Fergerson failed to stop at a stop sign and side-swiped a black 2009 Dodge that was parked along the roadway. Fergerson continued south on Scrantom, failing to stop for a second stop sign at Belleair Road. Deputies say he struck the passenger side of a blue 2016 Mercedes, injuring the passenger. Fergerson got out of his car and fled the scene of the crash on foot. Deputies caught Fergerson not far from the scene.

The passenger of the Mercedes, Ryan McMalton, 21, of Largo was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Fergerson was arrested and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.

Fergerson was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, felony leaving the scene of a crash with injury, two counts of fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer,  resisting arrest without violence, possession of crack cocaine, and no valid drivers license.

The investigation continues.
