The bus was carrying 40 elementary school children. None were hurt.

PASCO COUNTY – A pick up truck fled the scene after hitting a stopped school bus Friday (Jan. 29) that was unloading children, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The bus, driven by Judith Martin, 57, of Port Richey, was carrying 40 pupils from Dr. Mary Giella Elementary School. An FHP spokesman said no one on the bus was hurt.

The FHP says it happened about 4:20 p.m. when the bus was stopped, unloading students, northbound on Caufield Road south of Saint Paul Drive. The truck was stopped behind the bus but began to accelerate. The front of the pick up hit the rear of the school bus. The truck kept going, made a U-turn on Caufield and was last seen traveling south on Caufield.

The vehicle that hit the bus was described as a faded black or green Ford F150 short bed pickup with no license plate. The FHP says it is believed to have a lightning bolt on the side of the vehicle and a chrome bumper guard. The driver was described as awhite male, 40 to 50 years old, with a sleeve tattoo on his left arm. The FHP said he was wearing a baseball cap and a black sleeveless shirt with white trim around the arms.
