None of the children received serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

PASCO COUNTY – Five middle schoolers were injured Monday (Jan. 25) when another driver ran a red light and hit their school bus, Florida Highway Patrol spokesmen said.

Troopers said it happened about 3:30 p.m. Monday (Jan. 25). Charlotte Nielsen, 72, of Palm Harbor, was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra west on Trinity Boulevard toward the intersection of Little Road. A school bus driven by Walter Michaels, 56, of New Port Richey, was stopped on Little, preparing to turn onto Trinity. Troopers said Nielsen did not see the red light at the intersection and hit the bus as it began turning.

The bus had 53 children from Seven Springs Middle School. Five of them sustained minor injuries but were not taken to the hospital, troopers said. Nielsen received minor injuries and was taken to Trinity Hospital. The bus driver was not injured.

Troopers said they cited Nielsen for failing to obey a red light.
