Thousands set off early this morning in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG – As the sun crept over the eastern lip of Tampa Bay, cannon booms sent thousands of St. Anthony’s triathletes on their way in waves this (April 24) morning.

The 33rd annual swim-bike-run festival included several races and related attractions during the weekend, but the Olympic-distance triathlon was the main event. Athletes swim 1.5 kilometers (.9 miles),  bike  40 kilometers (24.8 miles) and run 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Staffed by members of the St. Petersburg-based Mad Dogs Triathlon Club, this stop would become one of the busiest places in town a little later as thirsty runners rehydrated. More than 1,000 volunteers helped put on the race.
