TAMPA – Rufus Reid, considered to be among the world’s finest bass players, will perform 7:30 p.m. Monday (April 20) at the University of South Florida Concert Hall, 202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. Reid also is a composer of great breadth, having written for symphony orchestra, jazz ensembles large and small, concert bands, double-bass ensembles and solo bass performances.
At USF, the 71-year-old musician will perform his complex and highly praised Quiet Pride with the university’s jazz ensemble. A five-movement work generally for a big band performance, the composition was inspired by the sculpture of artist Elizabeth Catlett, whose 70-year career has celebrated the strength and endurance of African-American and Mexican women.
Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students, seniors and active military personnel. They can be purchased by phone at (813) 974-2323, or in person.
