St. Petersburg Preservation unveils its schedule for the popular series.

ST. PETERSBURG — In a sign of the season, the schedule for May’s Movies in the Park has been unveiled.

St. Petersburg Preservation Inc., ratcheting suspense until the last minute, pulled the off wraps at Thursday (April 14) night’s announcement party at the Ale and the Witch.

The movies run the gamut from classics (Singin’ in the Rain) to 21st century Academy Award winners (Searching for Sugarman).

The May Movies in the Park actually starts April 28 with a special show in west St. Petersburg — on the waterfront at Admiral Farragut Academy, 700 Park St. N. All the May dates are in North Straub Park on the downtown waterfront. At all, music starts at 7 p.m. The movies start as darkness allows. All the movie nights are free, although pay-as-you-can donations are appreciated.  Food  and beverages, including the adult kind, are available for purchase, although no alcohol will be allowed at the Farragut showing.

Here’s the complete schedule:

April 28 – Singin’ in the Rain (1952) – The classic with Gene Kelly and  Debbie Reynolds that many call the top musical of all time! This move only will take place on the waterfront at ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY (700 Park St. N.). No alcohol allowed at Farragut. Evening’s music, Sasha Tuck & the Friendly Giants (jazz fusion).

Downtown Movies in the Park at N Straub Park

May 5 – Three Amigos (1986) – Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short – down on their luck and up to their necks in senoritas, margaritas, banditos and bullets! Evening’s music, The Reina Collins Band (Americana with a Cinco de Mayo flavor).

May 12 – Radio (2003) – Cuba Gooding Jr., Ed Harris and Debra Winger. The touching and true story of a high school football coach and the developmentally challenged man he takes under his wing. A film to renew your faith in human nature. Evening’s music, Green Light District (jam band).

May 19 – Searching for Sugarman (2012) – Academy Award winning film about a little-known Detroit musician whose haunting voice and poetic lyrics made some believe he would be the next Dylan. Instead, he became a South African folk hero while being virtually unknown in the USA. You will leave wanting the sound track! Evening’s music, Acho Brother (Latin fusion).

May 26 – Labyrinth (1986) – A tribute to David Bowie! Labyrinth packs enough surprises to captivate an audience of children and provides enough wisecracking to keep adults laughing. Evening’s music, The Dukes of Rockingham (‘70’s with Bowie influence).
