Meet Pinellas Park’s New Police Chief

Assistant Chief Mike Haworth took over leadership of the Pinellas Park Police Department on Friday (April 24) during a change of command ceremony. He succeeds Dorene Thomas, who has retired.

PINELLAS PARK – The Police Department here has a new leader – Mike Haworth, who has spent his entire law enforcement career in Pinellas Park. He takes over from Dorene Thomas, who retired Friday (April 24).

 

Hired in 1990 as a police officer, Haworth has worked a wide variety of assignments including patrol, criminal investigation, vice and narcotics, SWAT, and research and planning. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1995. As a sergeant, he supervised a patrol team and the vice and narcotics section. In 2000, he was appointed an acting lieutenant and worked in the services division assigned to internal affairs. In 2001, he was promoted to the rank of captain.  He has held every command position in the organization and, in 2013, was assigned to the city manager’s office as an interim assistant city manager. In August of that year, he returned to the Police Department to be in charge of uniformed patrol and special operations.  He was promoted to assistant chief of police in February, 2014, the first in Pinellas Park to hold that rank.

He was Pinellas Park Police Department’s Police Officer of the Year in 1995.

Haworth holds a bachelor of arts degree from Angelo State University and a master of public administration from Troy State University.  He is also a graduate of the 213th Session of the FBI National Academy and the certified public manager program from Florida State University.

Haworth has been married to his wife Kelly for 31 years. They live in Pinellas Park.
