Wrong-Way Crash Kills Tampa Man

The wrong-way driver had been drinking, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Tampa man died early this morning (May 9) when his car was hit head on by a wrong-way driver.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers did not release the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.Troopers say the man, 35, died at the scene.

Troopers arrested Ronal R. Vasquez-Gonzalez, 23, and charged him with DUI manslaughter and driving with no license causing a death.

The crash happened about 12:12 a.m. on U.S. 41 approaching Dover Street. Vasquez-Gonzalez was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse south in the northbound inside lane of U.S. 41, the FHP said. The other driver, in a 1999 Honda Civic, was driving north in the northbound inside lane. The Eclipse hit the Civic head on and both cars spun. The Eclipse came to rest in the grass median, troopers said. The Civic stopped in the northbound outside lane.

Vasquez-Gonzalez was taken to Tampa General Hospital with minor injuries.
