The accident happened when the man left the road and hit a tow truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Venice man died Sunday (June 12) night when his car hit a tow truck on the interstate, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Eamonn Michael Lonergan, 23, of Venice, died at the scene. The other driver, Fernando J. Games, 49, of Tampa, was not injured.

FHP troopers said the accident happened about 9:45 p.m. on I-75. Mr. Lonergan was driving his 2009 Subaru Legacy north in the inside lane. Troopers said he left the roadway and hit the rear of a 1997 International 4700 tow truck that was towing a vehicle on the inside road shoulder. After the impact, both vehicles traveled to the outside shoulder where they came to rest in the tree line. Troopers said it’s unclear why Mr. Lonergan left the roadway and hit the truck.
