Two Die after Sunset Music Festival

Tampa police confirmed two deaths are thought to be related to the weekend event.

TAMPA – Two concert goers died after a weekend music festival, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Police said Tuesday (May 31) that the Hillsborough Medical Examiner had confirmed two deaths related to the event: a 21-year-old woman from Kissimmee who was taken to the hospital Saturday (May 29) and died Monday (May 31). The other was a 22-year-old man from Melbourne who was taken to the hospital Saturday (May 29) and died Sunday (May 30). The cause of their deaths has not been released.

The Sunset Music Festival, held Saturday and Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, was billed as “the fifth annual edition of SMF [which] will ring in the summer with the unrivaled power of dance music. Groove your heart out to more than 45 of today’s most in-demand electronic producers over three blissful stages.”

But the reality was different for some, according to statistics released Tuesday (May 31) by Tampa police and Fire Rescue:

  • two fatalities
  • 57 taken to the hospital for treatment
  • 25 felony arrests
  • eight misdemeanor arrests
  • 16 marijuana civil citations (under 20 grams)
  • four noise complaints
