Lisa Montelione is resigning to run for the state House of Representatives. Her resignation is effective election day, Nov. 8.

TAMPA – Lisa Montelione on Friday (June 10) turned in her resignation from the Tampa City Council.

The resignation is required by the state’s resign-to-run law because Montelione is running for State House District 63. Her resignation will become effective on election day, Nov. 8, win or lose.

Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer has set Nov. 8 as the election date for voters to choose someone to fill out the remainder of Montelione’s term. Under the timeline, petitions to be on the ballot are due at Latimer’s office on Aug. 26 and the qualifying period will run from Sept. 5 – Sept. 9.

Montelione, who holds the District 7 seat, submitted her resignation in a four-paragraph letter to Latimer and Tampa city clerk Shirley Foxx-Knowles. It said in part:

“Serving on Tampa City Council has been a great privilege and I am overcome with a humble sense of accomplishment when I reflect on my five years’ of service to this district and its constituents. During my service on the council, I have worked on many important and controversial issues, ranging from protecting our citizens’ First Amendment rights to protecting their homes from flooding; from being a champion for transportation improvements, pedestrian and bicycle safety to being an advocate for economic growth and fiscal transparency.

“I believe that the challenges facing our city and county are such that serving the people of our community in the Florida House of Representatives is the best way for me to ensure its constituents have a strong voice on the issues.

“It has been a great pleasure to represent the citizens of Tampa as a member of the City Council and the citizens of Hillsborough County through my appointments to the boards on which I have had the privilege to serve. If I am so honored to receive their vote again, I look forward to representing them in the halls of the Florida state Capitol and the neighborhoods of District 63.”

Montelione and Mike Reedy, both Democrats, are running against incumbent Shawn Harrison, R-Tampa. House District 63 covers part of Hillsborough County.
