HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY -A Hillsborough deputy swerved off the road Tuesday (Dec. 22) to avoid being hit by a truck being driven the wrong way.

The deputy, who was not hurt, got back on the road and arrested the driver, Fernando Ramirez. Ramirez, 27, of 2008 Brandon Crossing Circle in Brandon, was charged with DUI and no valid drivers license.

A Hillsborough sheriff’s spokeswoman said it all began about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 22) when Deputy William Barnes was dispatched to a reckless driver call at the intersection of Forbes Road and MLK Boulevard E. The vehicle, a white Ford F150. was headed west from that intersection in the eastbound lane. Barnes was traveling east on MLK, according to the Hillsborough sheriff. As Barnes neared the small crest in the road just west of Gallagher Road, he saw a large vehicle in his lane of travel. Barnes swerved to the right and went off the road to avoid a head-on collision. As the vehicle passed him, he saw it was a white Ford F150.

Barnes got back on the road and stopped the truck MLK, east of Valrico Road. Barnes observed several indicators of impairment when he saw Ramirez and called in a DUI unit. Ramirez was arrested and taken to the Orient Road Jail.
