Fiery Hillsborough Crash Claims Two

The crash happened when one vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A fiery head-on collision caused the deaths of a driver and his passenger Saturday (Feb. 20) night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Benito Aguirre Bustos, 54, of Wimauma, a passenger in a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban, died at the scene. The Suburban’s driver, Odilon Valencia, 36, of Ruskin, died of his injuries at South Bay Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle, Serge Landkas, 64, of Bradenton, was in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital, troopers said.

Troopers said the accident happened about 9:05 p.m. The Chevrolet was headed north on U.S. 301 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed into oncoming traffic. It crashed head-on into a 2016 Ford F350 driven by Landkas that was towing a trailer withmultiple pieces of equipment including a golf cart, fork lift, ATVs and dirt bikes. After the impact, the Chevrolet caught fire and Mr. Valencia was thrown from the Suburban.

None of the three was wearing a seat belt. It is unclear if alcohol was involved in the crash, the FHP said. No charges have been filed.
