Two died in the three-car crash that happened early this morning (Sept. 5)

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Zephyrhills man was arrested and charged with DUI after a car crash that killed two people early this morning (Sept. 5) in Hillsborough County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Both of the people who died were from Lakeland. The FHP is withholding their names until relatives are notified.

Charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of driving with a suspended/revoked license in an accident involving death was David Thomas Flanagan, 47, of Zephyrhills. He received minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Florida Hospital in Zephyrhills.

Also receiving minor injuries were occupants of a third vehicle. The occupants, Amy Kay Dudeck, 32; Stabley John Dudeck, 27: and Sophia Dudeck, 1, all of Plant City, were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

The FHP described the accident: A 2008 Hyundai Sonata driven by Flanagan, was traveling northbound on SR-39 just north of Candis Road about 12: 30 a.m. The Dudecks’ car, a 2004 Isuzu, was traveling northbound on SR-39 just north of Candis Road in front of Flanagan. A 2006 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound on SR-39 just north of Candis Road.

Troopers say Flanagan failed to observe traffic traveling at a slower speed ahead. As a result, the front of his Hyundai hit the rear of the Isuzu. Upon impact, the Isuzu veered into the southbound lane and into the path of the Toyota.

The Isuzu and Toyota collided head-on. After the impact, the Isuzu spun and overturned. The Honda left the road and struck a power pole.

Both occupants of the Honda sustained fatal injuries and expired at the scene of the crash. Flanagan was taken to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills where he was later arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and driving while his license was suspended involving a death.
