The Airport Water Reclamation Facility expansion came in more than $700,000 under budget, Hernando County officials say.

HERNANDO COUNTY – The Hernando County utilities department recently achieved a milestone for its wastewater treatment operations.

The much anticipated Airport Water Reclamation Facility expansion, 1400 Downwind Way in Spring Hill, has been completed and is  operating. A ribbon cutting and tour of the facility is planned for noon today (Oct. 21).

“The project was completed on time and under the anticipated budget of $24,577,400 at a final cost of $23,854,897,” utilities director Gordon Onderdonk said. “The $722,000 savings was achieved through value engineering and owner direct purchasing which eliminated the sales tax on large equipment purchases.”

This two-year construction project expanded and modernized the facility increasing its wastewater treatment capacity from 1.25 millions of gallons per day (MGD) to 3.5 MGD.

“Available water and sewer capacity is a very important recruiting tool for economic development,” Hernando County Administrator Leonard Sossamon said.

The facility is equipped with new electrical and mechanical equipment utilizing remote monitoring and controls. An odor control system was installed and a new solids dewatering facility was built. In addition, five new percolation ponds totaling 13.65 acres were added to increase discharge capacity.

HCUD provides water and wastewater services to 62,000 customers throughout Hernando County. The department operates and maintains 23 water treatment plants and five wastewater treatment facilities.
