A public hearing Tuesday will include such issues as possible express lanes with tolls .

ST. PETERSBURG — The Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold a public hearing about its plan to widen St. Petersburg sections of I-275 between Fourth Street N near the Howard Frankland Bridge to south of 54th Avenue S. The hearing is 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 29) at the First Baptist Church Heritage Hall, 1900 Gandy Blvd. N.

The 16.3-mile project is in its study phase, which DOT says will analyze the need for “operational improvements for the corridor and (evaluate) the location, conceptual design, and social, economic and environmental effects of any proposed improvements.”

The plan includes the addition of express lanes with tolls.

Critics cite potential damage to historic structures on or near 22nd Street S, St. Petersburg’s main African-American neighborhood during the segregation era, and in the Historic Kenwood neighborhood.
