Expect Traffic Snarls in Clearwater for the Next Two Weekends

CSX | Railroad | Rail Crossing

Pinellas County officials are predicting the traffic impact will be “significant” from work being done on railroad crossings.

CLEARWATER – CSX will conduct railroad crossing improvements along the tracks that cross Court and Chestnut streets in Clearwater, the artery to and from Clearwater Beach and through downtown Clearwater. Construction will occur during two weekends: This Friday through Sunday (Feb. 19 to 21)  and Feb. 26 to 28. The impact to traffic will be significant. Detour routes will be clearly posted, and police will be present to direct traffic.

Court Street
Court Street will be closed starting Friday (Feb. 19) around 9 a.m. after the morning rush through about 11 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 21)  from S Myrtle Avenue to S Fort Harrison Avenue. During this time, drivers will be diverted northbound and southbound onto S Myrtle Avenue: Northbound drivers will turn left onto Pierce Street, then left onto S Fort Harrison Avenue to reconnect with Court Street; southbound drivers will turn right onto Turner Street, then right onto S Fort Harrison Avenue to reconnect with Court Street.

Chestnut Street
Chestnut Street will be closed starting around 9 a.m. Feb. 26 after the morning rush through about 11 p.m. Feb. 28 from S Fort Harrison Avenue to S Myrtle Avenue. During this time, drivers will be diverted northbound and southbound onto S Fort Harrison Avenue: Northbound drivers will turn right onto Franklin Street, then right onto S Myrtle Avenue to reconnect with Chestnut Street; southbound drivers will turn left onto Turner Street, then left onto S Myrtle Avenue to reconnect with Chestnut Street.

Pinellas Trail
A stretch of the Pinellas Trail in this area will also be closed during construction from Cleveland Street south to Turner Street. Trail users should detour to S Myrtle Avenue, as the section from Cleveland to Turner will be inaccessible during construction.

Residents with questions can call Dan White, project administrator, with the Florida Department of Transportation at (727) 798-9576.
