Pinellas County is widening a portion of Starkey Road. Officials are predicting traffic delays in the area near Park Boulevard until the work is completed in 2017.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Drivers in Seminole can expect traffic delays in the area of Starkey Road and Park Boulevard for the next year or so.

Work is underway on an extensive road project to improve traffic flow on a section of Starkey Road/Park Street N from 84th Lane N to 82nd Avenue N in Seminole. The project will cause lane closures as Pinellas County contractors transform sections of the road from four lanes to a six-lane divided roadway and make enhancements to major intersections. In addition to widening the road, the work also includes improvements to turn lanes, sidewalks, accessibility ramps, pavement markings, drainage and traffic signals.

Motorists can expect travel delays with various sections of the road reduced to one lane throughout the course of the project. The work is expected to be completed in 2017.

These traffic enhancements are part of Pinellas County’s capital improvement program. The traffic program focuses on alleviating congestion on major routes, improving safety and adding sidewalks and other features for better pedestrian use. This project, estimated at $13-million, is funded by the 1-cent Penny for Pinellas sales tax along with a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation and other county enterprise funds.

The Pinellas County Commission awarded the Starkey Road project contract to David Nelson Construction Co. in Palm Harbor.

Another segment of the Starkey Road/Park Street North corridor is planned for future improvements between 54th Avenue North and Tyrone Boulevard, but dates for that work have not yet been scheduled.
