Driver Critically Injured in Hillsborough Traffic Crash
I-4 was closed for several hours after the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Lakeland man was critically injured early Thursday (April 28) when his car turned over several times in a traffic crash on I-4.
Michael Robert Plaskett, 26, of Lakeland, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman said. The driver of the other vehicle, Yonlys Pena of Tampa, was not injured.
FHP troopers said Plaskett was driving a 1999 Lexus east on I-4 west of Branch Forbes Road around 3:54 a.m. when he drifted into the outside lane. He collided with a trailer being towed by the 2012 semi-tractor trailer that Pena was driving. The Lexus flipped several times and came to rest in the eastbound center lane. Pena was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop. It is unclear why Plaskett drifted into the other lane, troopers said. The crash closed sections of I-4 until 7:30 a.m. Alcohol was not a factor, according to the FHP. Charges are pending.
