Clearwater High Senior One of 350 in U.S. Chosen as Dell Scholar

The Dell Scholars program, an initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, recognizes students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educations.

PINELLAS COUNTY -Jose Becerra, a senior at Clearwater High School, has been chosen for the prestigious 2016 Dell Scholars Program Class of 2016.

He is the only student in Pinellas County. He is one of just 10 in the state and one of 350 in the U.S. to receive the honor.

Becerra will be the first in his family to attend a four-year university. He plans to attend the University of North Florida, majoring in biology, with a concentration in biotechnology and molecular biology. In addition to biology, Jose enjoys geometry. He participated in the Clearwater Leadership Academy the summer of his junior year.

The Dell Scholars program, an initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, recognizes students who have overcome significant obstacles to pursue their educations. The program is uniique in its outlook and help. The initial award includes financial support of $20,000, a laptop and textbook credits. The program also provides ongoing support and assistance to address all of the emotional, lifestyle, and financial challenges that may prevent kids from completing college. Those pressures range from dealing with stress, to getting out of debt, to tackling substance abuse or child care if life circumstances should require it.
The program focuses on more than grades when deciding which students win the scholarships. For the program, GPA does not mean grade point average, instead, it means grit, potential and ambition. Only 300 or so Dell scholars are chosen each year and those who are display grit, potential and ambition, according to the foundation’s website.
In turn, Dell scholars serve as positive role models and change the trajectories for their families, friends and their communities.
