The water department garnered several individual awards, too, including one for the Golden Manhole Society.

ST. PETERSBURG — The city’s Water Resources Department was recognized by the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) at the annual Florida Water Resources Conference in Kissimmee last week for outstanding achievement at the city’s three water reclamation facilities and for its wastewater collection system.

St. Petersburg’s water reclamation system is not only the first to be built in the United States, it also remains one of the largest in the world. The city’s  system provides more than 37 million gallons per day to more than 10,600 customers, primarily for lawn irrigation. Reclaimed water is also an integral part of the city’s overall environmental and sustainability initiatives.

The city was honored as the Reuse System of the Year in the large system category for all three facilities, Southwest, Northwest and Northeast Water Reclamation Plants. The David W. York Reuse Award recognizes excellence in the use of reclaimed water.

The Biosolids/Residuals Program Excellence Award recognizes excellence in all areas of biosolids management. The Northeast Water Reclamation Plant was recognized in the small operating category for plants producing less than five tons of dry biosolids per day.

In addition, the Southwest Water Reclamation Plant was awarded the Environmental Stewardship Award for Odor Control.

Individual awards were given to Lane Longley, waste water maintenance manager and Craven Askew, chief operator of the Northeast Plant. Longley was inducted into the Golden Manhole Society for his outstanding contributions to the art and science of collection system operations. Askew was honored with the William D. Hatfield Award, a national award for operators of wastewater treatment plants for outstanding performance and professionalism.
