A 10-day festival will bring the art of writing in its many forms to St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG — An expansive celebration of literacy starts Friday (March 4) in St. Petersburg and runs through March 13 at 24 venues. The SunLit Festival features 46 events with 18 organizations involved. Most of the events are free.

Here’s a small taste of what’s in store:

• The St. Petersburg Library System will have children’s reading activities at all its branches.
• Eight of the Tampa Bay region’s most daring writers will compete with each to produce a compelling story. They’ll have five minutes to do it. This takes place Friday (March 4) at the Bloom Art Center, 910 Fifth Ave. N.
• A Shakespeare experience is 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday (March 5) and 4 p.m. Sunday (March 6) in the courtyard of the Williams House on the University of south Florida St. Petersburg Campus. The house is on Second Street S between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Professional actors will perform Cymbaline. Suggested donation is $10.
• “The Dark Arts” program will features writers of horror novels and of the supernatural. It’s 2 p.m. Sunday (March 6) at the Wine Madonna, 111 Second Ave. NE.

The festival is co-produced by the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, Keep St. Pete Lit, and the Florida Antiquarian Book Fair, in cooperation with the participating venues.  Funding support for family events comes from PNC Bank, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The DeBartolo Family Foundation, Barnes & Nobel USFSP, and St. Petersburg Arts Alliance.
