St. Pete City Council begins a campaign today to tell the public.

ST. PETERSBURG — A plan that could move buses away from Williams Park by February 2016 will get its start at today’s (Oct. 1) City Council meeting.

I Love the Burg.com web site also has reported that the city and the county bus agency — called the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority — will work to create a grid system of bus transportation, which would take effect this coming Feb. 14.

The idea is to make the park in the middle of downtown more attractive and to make travel more efficient for passengers. Currently, some routes meander and take passengers out of their way or force long layovers in the park.

Bus removal from the park has been contemplated for years by city officials. It has been seen as a major step in improving the park’s ambience, which for decades has been a stop for homeless people.

Under the proposal, the main bus center would become the Grand Central Station at Central Avenue and 32nd Street.

The council meeting is 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 175 Fifth St. N.
