A History, Heritage and Justice observance happens Sunday on The Deuces.
ST. PETERSBURG — Gallerie 909 on 22nd Street South Sunday (Aug. 9) is celebrating the first anniversary of the street’s African-American Heritage Trail, while at the same time drawing attention to issues of justice.
The free event is based at Carla Bristol’s art gallery at 909 22nd Street S and takes place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Bristol founded the gallery in 2014 and is among the entrepreneurs working to revive 22nd Street, the main thoroughfare for St. Petersburg’s African-American community during segregation days.
The heritage trail also opened in 2014. It consists of numerous high-profile markers identifying historic persons, places and events in the 22nd Street neighborhood. They are placed on 22nd Street S and on Ninth Avenue S.
Sunday also is the one-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo.
Discussion, music, drums, spoken word performance and a virtual tour of the heritage trail are on the day’s agenda.
