St. Pete Celebrates Martin Luther King

The 10-event celebration begins Sunday (Jan. 7) and ends Jan. 15 with the 33rd annual parade, leadership awards, a day of fun and a day of service.

ST. PETERSBURG – The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and contributions to the Civil Rights Movement will be the focus of 10 events during the next nine days.

The events begin Sunday (Jan. 7) with song and are anchored by the 33rd Annual “MLK Dream Big” Parade. Here’s the complete list:

SOUNDS OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT – The Power of Song – 3 p.m. and 7 p..m. Sunday (Jan. 7) and 7 p.m. Monday (Jan. 8),  Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N.

37th Annual MLK HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST FINALS – 7 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 11).
Students make their final oratorical presentations at the Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave. S. Free and open to the public. Cosponsored by the St. Petersburg Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Organization. and Theta Eta Lambda Education Foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

The “MLK Dream Big” Elementary BRAIN BOWL – 11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 13), Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum, 2240 9th Ave S.
Academic collegiate team competition for fifth graders, presented by Advantage Village Academy. Spectator tickets, $5 at the door.

First MLK DAY KICKOFF 3-ON-3 BASKETBALL CLASSIC – 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 14, Jet Jackson Recreation Center, 1000 28th St. S.

33rd Annual “MLK DREAM BIG” PARADE – 11 a.m. Jan. 15
Please Note NEW ROUTE THIS YEAR! MLK Parade route travels west again this year: Parade begins on First Avenue S at Third Street, proceeds west to 16th Street, turning south on 16th Street for two blocks, then west onto Third Avenue S. and disbanding near Tropicana Field Lot 1. Second Annual “MLK DREAM BIG” 2018 FAMILY FUN DAY FESTIVAL – 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 15, immediately following the MLK Parade on the east side of Tropicana Field, Parking Lot 7A. Free admission. Free activities, games and more. Live entertainment, Kids Zone, food and art vendors (items available for purchase). Disabled parking in Trop Lot 6, enter from First Avenue S. near 14th Street.
