U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis made his statement after recent health-care reform listening sessions with constituents.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Gus Biliraks, R-Tarpon Springs, released this statement after his health-care reform listening session in Wesley Chapel, the third public meeting he has held this month. The event ran for more than two and a half hours as Bilirakis fielded questions and listened to constituents.

“I held a series of public listening sessions on health care because it is my duty as a representative to hear firsthand from my constituents, whether we agree or disagree on the issues. I will continue to seek common ground and constructive exchanges of ideas with the people of my district. That’s what democracy is all about,”Bilirakis said.

“But the Affordable Care Act in its current state is unsustainable and it’s only going to get worse—costs are going up, while choices and flexibility are dwindling. We need a health care system that is truly patient-focused, and I will use the input from my recent meetings to shape my work on the replacement legislation.”

In the House, Bilirakis serves on the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, where he has the unique opportunity to be the voice of Florida’s 12th Congressional District on major health care reform issues. He is the only Florida Republican currently serving on the committee. After his events in Palm Harbor and New Port Richey earlier this month, Bilirakis announced he cosponsored legislation to protect pre-existing conditions under the replacement of the Affordable Care Act.

The 12th Congressional District covers parts of Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties.
