Moody to Speak at Drug Prevention Summit in Tampa
Ashley Moody is the newly elected Florida attorney general.
TAMPA – Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody will be one of the featured speakers at the Seventh Annual Southeastern U.S. Regional Drug Prevention Summit.
The summit is hosted by the Drug Free America Foundation and the Hillsborough County Anti Drug Alliance. The event, which runs Monday (Feb. 18) through Wednesday (Feb. 20) at TPepin’s Hospitality Center, 4121 N 50th St., includes drug education and prevention training provided by national experts and local leaders.
“We’re excited to remain on the forefront of drug prevention with this event as it aims to help educate, train and offer networking opportunities with professionals from across the southeastern region of the United States who are dealing with the effects of substance abuse,” said Cindy Grant, executive director of the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance.
Moody will deliver the opening remarks for the summit. Since her election in November, she has identified combating the opioid epidemic as one of her top priorities and has created the Opioid Abuse Working Group to gather information and best practices from across the state to combat it. This group consists of 18 experts and community leaders.
The keynote speaker will be Robert L. DuPont, M.D., founding president of the Institute for Behavior and Health. He has more than 50 years’ experience as a leader in drug abuse prevention and treatment, serving as the first director of the NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse from 1973 to 1978. He also was the second White House Drug Chief from 1973 to 1977. DuPont has written more than 400 professional articles and 15 books and monographs on a variety of health-related subjects. In 2018, he authored his most recent book, Chemical Slavery: Understanding Addiction and Stopping the Drug Epidemic.
After day two of the summit, there will be a movie night at the ACTS Auditorium where they will show Chronic State, a documentary on the consequences of drug legalization, produced by the Drug-Free Idaho coalition in Boise in partnership with the documentary film team of Ronn Seidenglanz and Tanya Pavlis.
