Health Insurance Enrollment Extended for Areas Impacted by Hurricanes

The deadline to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act has been extended to Dec. 31 for residents of areas impacted by the year’s hurricanes.

PINELLAS COUNTY – Even though the Marketplace Open Enrollment Period for 2018 Affordable Healthcare Act coverage ended Friday (Dec. 15), enrollment has been extended for residents impacted by one of the storms during the 2017 hurricane season.

That includes residents of Pinellas, according to county officials. Those unable to complete a Marketplace application, plan selection or participate in the enrollment process may have access to an Exceptional Circumstances Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

This exceptional circumstance SEP will allow impacted consumers to select a 2018 Marketplace plan or make changes to their existing 2018 plan any time before the end of this year.

Consumers will be considered impacted and eligible for the extended enrollment if they resided in any of the counties declared as meeting the level of individual assistance or public assistance by the Federal Emergency Management Agency during and after the time of the storms. Consumers must attest that living in the area made them unable to enroll by Friday’s enrollment deadline. No further documentation is needed. Go to fema.gov for a list of impacted areas.
