U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis made his statement in response to a presidential proposal to convene a commission on the opioid crisis.

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Tarpon Springs, a member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, released this statement Wednesday (March 29) after President Donald Trump took executive action to convene a commission that will review ways to combat the nation’s opioid crisis and better assist those affected.

“The opioid epidemic is not only a national crisis, it affects families and communities right here at home in Florida’s 12th District. Combating drug abuse and addiction has been, and will continue to be, a top priority for me. We need to work closely with local law enforcement, doctors, addiction treatment specialists, and those impacted by addiction in an all-hands-on-deck effort.  I’m thrilled the president is leading the charge on this critical issue, and I look forward to working with him to help save lives and prevent addiction.”

Last year, Bilirakis championed legislation to fight opioid abuse, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act. He also helped secure $1 billion to address the crisis within the 21st Century Cures Act.

Bilirakis represents Florida’s 12th Congressional District, which covers north Pinellas and Pasco counties.
