It’s the first wall in the city’s new Police Department.

ST. PETERSBURG – In a major step forward for construction, the beginnings of the first section of wall in St. Petersburg’s new Police Department was put in place today (Nov. 17).

The walls will all be going up in the next couple of weeks.

The process is called “tilt wall construction.” The concrete was poured into frames on the ground over the past several weeks. Then, today, a crane began lifting the 9 1/4-inch thick slabs, which weigh up to 11,000 pounds, to a vertical position before they’re placed in a permanent position to create the outer walls of the buildings. Temporary metal braces will keep them in place.

Only one lane of First Avenue Nh will be open to traffic during the day while this part of building construction is underway. The process may take several days.

The $78.5 million project is on schedule and within budget. It’s expected completion date is early 2019.
