The Family Recreation Center is scheduled for renovations that include a new fitness center.

TEMPLE TERRACE – The city of Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex will undergo a major renovation beginning this month.

The 10-month project includes plans to construct a new fitness center, make improvements to outdoor basketball courts and the gymnastics center and revamp pool locker rooms, offices, classrooms and lobby of the building. The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Thursday (June 28) on the grounds of the complex, 6610 Whiteway Drive.

Temple Terrace Mayor Mel Jurado, Council members Andy Ross, Bob Boss and Cheri Donohue, City Manager Charles Stephenson and Leisure Services Director Karl Langefeld will be joined by Project Architect Jovanni Betancourt and Contractor Jeremy Brown at the groundbreaking. Children attending the summer camp will give a brief performance.

The original Family Complex was constructed in 1979. This will be the first major renovation and expansion of the facility since 1998. Funding for the renovation is split over two fiscal years, with $1.4 million budgeted in FY 2017-18 from the Community Investment Tax fund and the balance of the total of $2,608,000 budgeted for 2018-19.

Woodroffe Corp. Architects completed the renovation design for the Family Recreation Complex. Bandes Construction is managing construction for the project, which will begin with relocating the fitness center to the upstairs gym. The area that currently houses the fitness center will be converted into a youth programs activity space. New dance studios are planned as is an outdoor multipurpose play court.

The second phase, beginning this fall, will include renovations to the locker rooms and the addition of “family restrooms,” among other improvements. The final phase will focus on the entrance and lobby area to address traffic flow and enhance customer service areas. It also will include the addition of a snack bar/coffee shop style lounge.

The complex will remain open during the construction. There will be periodic interruptions in service, but efforts will be made to minimize the impact on operations. A grand reopening celebration is planned for spring 2019.

Project updates about the project will be posted on th city’s website, TempleTerrace.com and Facebook page, Facebook.com/CityOfTempleTerrace.
