The wastewater/stormwater task force was formed to come up with long-term countywide solutions to prevent overflows and other sewage issues.

PINELLAS COUNTY – A countywide task force to solve Pinellas’ sewer issues is slated to hear findings and initial solutions and recommendations from a subcommittee of technical stormwater and wastewater experts.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Monday (Jan. 30)  at the University Partnership Center – Digitorium, located at the Seminole Campus of St. Petersburg College, 9200 113^th St. N in Seminole. Attendees will have the opportunity interact with Task Force members and share comments or questions.

The Wastewater/Stormwater Task Force formed was formed last year at the behest of Pinellas County Commissioner Charlie Justice in response to the dumping of thousands of gallons of raw and partly treated wastewater into Tampa Bay and other water bodies during two tropical storms. The water was dumped when the systems became overwhelmed from the heavy rains. Some cities and areas of the county also saw problems from defective manholes that allowed untreated sewage to escape into streets.

The countywide team, comprised of leaders and staff from Pinellas County government, 17 municipalities and three private utility systems, was expected to create long-term, comprehensive solutions for stormwater inflow and groundwater infiltration issues, as well as to identify the potential need for increased countywide system capacity. Capacity is directly impacted by the amount of stormwater flowing into the sewer system and the amount of groundwater penetrating the system.
