It will be headed by Keith Sabiel Jr., a 20-plus year city veteran and son of recently elected council member Keith Sabiel Sr.

PINELLAS PARK – Officials here have created a new city department.

The Pinellas Park Leisure Services Department will include parks, recreation and library services.

The department will be headed by Keith Sabiel Jr., who will begin his new position Jan. 3. Sabiel, the current recreation director, has worked for Pinellas Park for more than 20 years. He has a degree in education. He is also the son of Keith Sabiel Sr., the former assistant public works administrator/utility director, who retired from the city in 2014 after 40 years on the job. Sabiel Sr. became the city’s newest council member in November when he was unopposed at the close of election qualifying.

Sabiel Jr. will earn about $81,054 as leisure services administrator. That’s about a 19 percent, or $12,771, raise from his approximately $68,283 salary as recreation director.

“The city is pleased to announce the establishment of this new department and I am confident that under the leadership of Keith Sabiel Jr., this department will continue to provide the high quality service our residents enjoy,” Pinellas Park City Manager Doug Lewis said.
