PINELLAS COUNTY – The Pinellas County department that keeps many of your roads safe, traffic lights operating, surface water clean and mosquitoes at bay is hitting the national spotlight.

Pinellas County Public Works has earned the prestigious American Public Works Association accreditation designation. APWA Region IV Director Doug Layton made a formal presentation to department leaders at the Board of County Commissioners meeting today (Aug. 7).

APWA accreditation formally recognizes that a public works department complies with national standards set forth in the APWA Public Works Management Practices manual. It verifies that an agency is focused on continuous improvement and has conducted an in-depth self-assessment of its policies, procedures and practices and consolidated them in a central location. Pinellas County is only the 12th agency in Florida and 140th in North America to achieve the status.

“The awarding of the APWA accreditation shows that the entire Public Works team is dedicated to continuous improvement and excellence in meeting the needs of our residents and visitors,” Assistant County Administrator Rahim Harji said. “The prestigious award is a testament to our mission to be the standard for public service in America.”

For the Pinellas County review, a team of public works professionals from Mohave County, AZ,, Lee’s Summit, MO, and Kansas City, MO, completed a thorough evaluation of operations during a site visit in June. The accreditation process provided a structured mechanism for meeting specific objectives.
