The city plans to drill four wells to help dispose of partially and fully treated wastewater.

ST. PETERSBURG – This city has scheduled an informational meeting to gather comment from residents about a proposal to dig four wells to help increase the capacity of St. Petersburg’s sewer system.

The meeting is 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 3) at the Water Resources Complex, 1650 Third Ave. N. The meeting itself will not last that long. The hours have been extended to allow residents more time to drop in and talk with officials from the city and from the state Environmental Protection Agency.

The wells are one of the first steps St. Petersburg is taking in a multi-million dollar plan to renovate its sewer system. The city was heavily criticized last year after it dumped thousands of gallons of untreated and partially treated water in Tampa Bay when the system was unable to handle the amount of water during heavy storms.

The wells will be constructed at 3800 54th Ave. S. They are designed to be used for the disposal of wastewater that has been at least partially treated with high level disinfection. The city wants to have them completed before the rainy season begins.

Those who attend the meeting will also be able to hear more about current conditions at the Southwest Water Resources Facility, hear an overview of the proposed plans and offer suggestions to Public Works staffers as the city moves ahead with the project.
