Solar co-ops are homeowners and business owners who group together to get lower prices on solar electricity.

ST. PETERSBURG – If the idea of getting energy from the sun appeals to you but you’ve hesitated because of cost or lack of information, the St. Pete Winter Solar Co-op can help.

The co-op – sponsored by the city of St. Petersburg, Solar United Neighbors of Florida, the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area, and the Suncoast Sierra Clubs – has an informational meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 7) at the Sunshine Center, 330 Fifth St. N in St. Pete. A solar co-op brings homeowners and businesses together into a group, or co-op, to take advantage of the group’s bulk-purchasing power to get discounted pricing and a quality installation. Volunteer co-op participants choose an installer on behalf of the entire group through an open and competitive bidding process. The selected installer provides co-op participants a personalized proposal for their consideration.

Solar United Neighbors of Florida provides unbiased, installer-neutral support to co-op participants through each stage of the process of going solar, from understanding how it works, to financing and installation.
