The ban does not apply to personal use on city property, such as families renting park pavilions.

LARGO – Largo City Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday (Jan. 22) to ban certain single-use plastic items on city property.

Commissioner Curtis Holmes was the lone voted against the ordinance.

The goal of the ordinance is to make the city cleaner and more sustainable. The ban that will go in effect July 1. It will prevent foam and plastic products such as plates, cups, and straws from being distributed on city property. This includes at city functions and at special events such but does not pertain to personal use such as families renting a pavilion in Largo Central Park.

Commission members decided to ban single-use plastics never break down in the environment but do break apart into smaller pieces known as microplastics. These microplastics pollute waterways and are eaten by wildlife, including the fish that humans eat.

By using eco-friendly alternatives such as paper, city officials said they are protecting the long-term economic and environmental health of the community. These efforts are part of the city’s sustainability goals as outlined in the Largo Environmental Action Plan (LEAP) and supports the city’s strategic plan initiatives.
