Kriseman Named to Top 100 in World for Climate-Friendly Policy
Apolitical, a global network for government, says the St. Petersburg mayor is one of the most influential people in the world when it comes to climate policy.
ST. PETERSBURG – Apolitical, a global network for government, has named St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman as one of the 100 most influential people in world climate policy.
Kriseman joins notables, such as U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY; Pope Francis; youth activist Greta Thunberg; broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough; and Mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah of the city of Accra, Ghana; on the list.
“Being included in this powerful round up is incredibly humbling considering so many people are doing important work around the globe,” Kriseman said. ” Credit to my policy team, council members, and the residents of St. Pete for believing in our work. I am proud of our progress as a city, but there is so much left to do.”
Apolitical describes itself as “a global network for government, helping public servants find the ideas, people and partners they need to solve the hardest challenges facing our societies.”
The group’s website explained the reasoning behind the compilation of the list:
“At a time when young people everywhere are marching to demand action on climate, it’s more important than ever to celebrate and support those with the most power to act: the people driving tangible policy change.
“Drawing on hundreds of nominations from experts and leading organisations, this list celebrates politicians, civil servants, academics and activists.
“Those recognized include high-profile advocates whose work is indispensable to raising awareness and demanding change. Others are rising stars who are making their mark in local communities and are a driving force behind governmental progress.”
The site explained Kriseman’s qualifications for inclusion on the list: “Rick Kriseman is the mayor of St Petersburg in Florida. In recognition of his commitment to environmental action, the city has recently been declared the 20th winning city in Bloomberg’s American Cities Climate Challenge, a scheme that works with cities to accelerate their efforts to tackle climate change. Under his leadership, St Petersburg has embarked on an innovative plan to reduce air pollution, implement a community solar program and increase renewable energy financing.”
