The free After-school Meals Program is part of the federal Child Care and Adult Food Program.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Students at 162 Hillsborough County public schools, including three additional schools this year, will be offered a free nutritious snack or meal if they are participating in after-school educational programs.

For the first time, Doby Elementary, Dawson Elementary and Mulrennan Middle schools will qualify for the free After-school Meals Program, which is part of the federal Child Care and Adult Food Program, because more than 50 percent of the enrolled students at these schools are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Snacks can include fruit, whole-grain muffins, vegetables, and yogurt with granola. Meals may include turkey and ham sandwiches on whole-grain rolls and tacos with ground turkey or beef.

The district’s Student Nutrition Services team continues to participate in the After-school Meals Program because of a commitment to supporting every child’s chance to learn. Schools that serve meals and snacks provide children not only with the nutrition they need to learn and grow, but also provides constructive activities that are safe and filled with opportunities for learning.

The Child Care and Adult Food Program provides reimbursement for nutritious snacks and/or meals served to children. Funding for this program comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service.
