Pinellas Schools Seek Public’s Help to Close Achievement Gap

Education | School | Students

The school system has scheduled four sessions to give updates and solicit ideas and comments on closing the achievement gap between white and black students.

PINELLAS COUNTY – With student performance and equity being a community and School Board priority, the district will hold a series of public input sessions on the 2016-2017 Bridging the Gap plan.

The first four meetings will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at these dates and places:

  • Tuesday (Oct. 4) – Largo High School
  •  Oct. 18 – Boca Ciega High School
  • Nov. 1 – Gibbs High School
  • Nov. 15 – Tarpon Springs High School

Bridging the Gap focuses on closing the achievement gap between black and non-black students by implementing action steps to increase graduation rates, improve student achievement, improve participation and performance in accelerated coursework, reduce disciplinary infractions and disparity, and reduce the over-representation of black students in exceptional student education classes.

The sessions will include status updates on closing the achievement gap and provide a forum for ideas to be solicited, discussed and considered. Each meeting will include a short presentation on the latest progress in closing the achievement gap and a summary of proposed actions steps. The greater part of each meeting will be dedicated to small group discussion and the gathering of ideas and opinions from teachers, parents and community members.
